Ohio State Board of Cosmetology License Information

In order to obtain a license in cosmetology, esthetics, and nail technology in the state of Ohio, students must complete the requirements listed below. Please contact the Ohio State Board of Cosmetology for more information.

Requirements

Ohio State Board of Cosmetology, License, Formal Training

The Ohio State Board of Cosmetology issues practicing licenses to applicants who fulfill the following requirements:

  • Is of good moral character
  • Has the equivalent of an Ohio public high school diploma or a GED
  • Passes an examination for the branch of cosmetology the applicant seeks to practice
  • Pays to the board the applicable fee

In addition, applicants for an initial license must have successfully completed formal training. Applicants are required to complete at least the following minimum number of board-approved cosmetology training hours in a school of cosmetology licensed in this state:

  • Cosmetology - 1500 Hours
  • Advanced Cosmetology - 1800 Hours
  • Manicuring - 200 Hours
  • Advanced Manicuring - 300 Hours
